The Spirit World Journey of an Indigenous Teen Brings Her Closer to Understanding and Appreciating Her Heritage
BOCA /PRNewswire/ — RATON, Fla., June 30, 2021 — Curiosity Ink Media, the original multiplatform entertainment company for kids and families, today announced plans to launch Thunderous, an original intellectual property (IP) franchise about a young Indigenous American’s journey to appreciate her family’s prized heritage, which was recently acquired by Grom Social Enterprises, Inc. (NASDAQ: GROM). The franchise will debut as a graphic novel for young readers, serving as a springboard for future publishing options as well as potential brand expansions such as consumer goods, a recurring TV show, and/or a feature film. Curiosity Ink Media’s Chief Content Officer, Russell Hicks, announced the franchise.
Indigenous culture naturally lends itself to fantastic storytelling opportunities that are sometimes disregarded in the entertainment industry.
Thunderous follows Kimimela, a Colorado adolescent who fails to find a link between her family’s Indigenous tradition and her modern existence, causing friction with her grandmother, a staunch supporter of the family’s heritage. Kimimela is transferred to a Spirit World as the novel progresses, and she soon realizes that comprehending her cultural traditions is one of the most important tools she needs to survive and return home. The book version of Thunderous fits within Curiosity’s recently announced publishing program, which aims to create a slate of printed content based on Curiosity’s original IP as well as cultivate print titles for other entertainment brands. “Our goal with Thunderous is to produce even more storytelling content on this rich history and to convey its significant practices and beliefs with a wider audience by forming an alliance with Indigenous cultural contributors. Readers will discover a world that is both accessible and transforming through the perspective of our vibrant characters.”
Grom’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Darren Marks, stated, “We’re thrilled about the potential impact of projects like Thunderous, which Grom acquired through its acquisition of Curiosity Ink Media. Monetizing the fantastic IP that we now have is a pillar of our economic plan, and Thunderous is another huge move in that direction, under the creative leadership of Russell Hicks, former Nickelodeon Animation President.”
