Ann Saphir (Reuters)/REUTERS President Robert Kaplan of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas said Wednesday that he wants the Fed to begin lowering its economic stimulus before the end of the year, in part to make an abrupt policy tightening less likely later. On Bloomberg TV, Kaplan said that slowing the Fed’s pace of asset purchases “would prefer sooner” than the end of the year, adding that the taper should be gradual. The labor market’s supply and demand balances would likely endure, making “explosive” job growth unlikely, he added, while he anticipates “continuous improvement.” And, while inflation is expected to fall to 2.4 percent next year from 3.5 percent this year, he believes it will be felt more widely. “I’d prefer to limit the risk,” he explained, “since there is uncertainty and upside risk” in his inflation forecast. “Because I’m concerned about the efficacy and some of the adverse effects of these purchases, I’d be on the front foot in being extremely ready to act sooner.” Ann Saphir contributed reporting.
