KUALA LUMPUR (May 31): Individuals detained by police should be taken for health screening before being placed in the lockups, said Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Datuk Seri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani.
He said the directive given to the police officers and policemen was to ensure a better standard operating procedure (SOP) in handling detainees in the lockups.
“PDRM (Royal Malaysia Police) do not want such an incident (death in a police lockup) to occur but basically, the procedure has been improved lately.
“We view the matter seriously, hence more improvements will be made including health screening for the suspected individuals’ next of kin,” he said at a special media conference in Bukit Aman here today.
Acryl Sani said police also called for the involvement of various parties including the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) to investigate any misconduct involving police personnel handling detainees in the lockups.
On the claim made by former IGP Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador on the existence of a cartel in the police force, Acryl Sani said he left it fully to the EAIC to investigate.
“PDRM has asked the EAIC to study and investigate the matter, following the allegation made against a security force and it is the right commission to do so. PDRM has also sent out a request letter accordingly.
“….let a third party conduct the investigation transparently and present the result of the probe into the issue,” he added.
Abdul Hamid had at his last press conference in April as IGP, revealed the existence of a cartel in the police force, besides the attempts to undermine him as he had been vocal in exposing the misconduct, corruption and lack of integrity among some police officers and other police personnel.
