KUALA LUMPUR (May 28): Another record high for new Covid-19 cases in the country with 8,290 infections reported today, up from yesterday’s 7,857, according to Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

This is the first time the country has breached the 8,000 mark.

Cumulative cases have risen to 549,514 as a result.

Dr Noor Hisham said in a tweet that Selangor remains the state with the most new infections at 2,052 cases, followed by Kelantan (851) and Kuala Lumpur (830).

Elsewhere, Johor posted 762 new cases, Sarawak (698), Kedah (544), Negeri Sembilan (520), Penang (421), Perak (405), Melaka (380), Sabah (308), Pahang (254), Terengganu (207), Putrajaya (44), Perlis (8) and Labuan (6).

The Ministry of Health had earlier this month predicted that lax compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) could push the number of daily Covid-19 cases past 8,000 in the first week of June.
