1 Minute Read by Reuters Staff DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (Reuters) – A senior official told state television on Wednesday that Iran has nominated Akbar Komeijani as the new head of the central bank. President Hassan Rouhani named Komeijani as the next head of the central bank today, according to presidential chief of staff Mahmoud Vaezi. Rouhani, whose second term ends in early August, fired Abdolnasser Hemmati on May 30 after the former central bank director filed to run for president in Iran’s June 18 election. Ebrahim Raisi, a hardline cleric, won the election and will enter government on August 5. After Hemmati’s dismissal, Komeijani, the central bank’s deputy governor since 2014, took on all of Hemmati’s responsibilities. Komeijani earned his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin. Parisa Hafezi wrote the piece, and Toby Chopra edited it. Continue reading
