Staff of Reuters Read for 2 minutes (Adds quotes, details) (Reuters) – VENICE, July 10 (Reuters) – Virus varieties are a huge source of concern for the global economy, according to Italy’s economics minister Daniele Franco, but the world should resist placing new limitations on people’s lives to battle the epidemic. “Vaccination is the only solution,” Franco remarked at the close of a conference of finance ministers and central bankers from the Group of 20 wealthy nations, which was held in Venice under the Italian leadership. “The pandemic and new varieties are the biggest source of (economic) uncertainty,” Franco told reporters, adding that “we all believe we should avoid placing new limitations on citizens’ travel and way of life.” At the summit, the G20 did not commit any more funds to funding vaccinations for poor countries at risk of COVID variants with low vaccination rates, but Franco said the group would revisit the issue in October. Franco praised the G20’s approval of a “historic” agreement on where and how major firms should be taxed, claiming that it will result in a “fairer and more coordinated system,” while details were still being worked out.
