Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) reportedly called out California Governor Gavin Newsom for allegedly running a shadow presidential campaign for 2024.

What Happened: During an address at the Iowa Democratic Party dinner on Saturday, Fetterman accused Newsom of running against President Joe Biden. He also mentioned Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.) who has openly challenged Biden.

“There are two additional Democrats running for Pennsylvania, excuse me, running for president right now,” Fetterman said, NBC News reported.

“One is a congressman from Minnesota, the other one is the governor of California, but only one has the guts to announce it,” Fetterman added.

Why It Matters: Governor Newsom, despite being seen as a potential Democratic presidential candidate, has consistently stated that he will not be running for the White House in 2024, even if Biden decides not to pursue reelection.

Meanwhile, Phillips announced his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination last month. Phillips has also been urging other Democrats to consider entering the race. In August, he stressed the importance of heeding this call, warning of potentially disastrous consequences if ignored.

The Minnesota Congressman encouraged those who are well-prepared and possess good character to consider running, emphasizing the need for competition within the party.

Meanwhile, Newsom is scheduled to participate in a televised debate on Fox News later this month with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican presidential candidate.
