KUALA LUMPUR/BENGALURU (July 7): According to a stock exchange filing on Wednesday, budget airline AirAsia Group Bhd said its digital operations have purchased two Thai technology businesses from Indonesian ride-hailing and payment provider Gojek for US$50 million.
AirAsia SuperApp will pay US$40 million for 100 percent of the stock stake in Velox Technology, while AirAsia Digital will pay US$10 million for the full equity in Velox Fintech.
The acquisitions would be met, according to AirAsia, by the issuance of shares in AirAsia SuperApp, with the sellers subscribing to ordinary shares totaling 4.76 percent of AirAsia SuperApp.
AirAsia was in talks with Gojek to buy its Thai operation, according to Nikkei Asia, which cited sources.
Gojek would take a stake in AirAsia’s digital arm in exchange for the low-cost carrier acquiring Gojek’s Thai operations.
A contract with the Indonesian unicorn startup comes just a week after the loss-making airline sought for a digital banking license in Malaysia, signaling a shift in focus away from traditional business as the majority of its fleet remains grounded due to coronavirus restrictions.
