FRANKFURT – BMW announced on Friday that it expects to dramatically increase electric car manufacturing at its Dingolfing facility, owing to the success of the iX sport utility vehicle. Last year, the luxury carmaker produced more than 18,000 electric cars at the plant, accounting for around 8% of total production, it said, adding that by 2021, that percentage will have risen to 16%, thanks to the start of serial production of the iX.
BMW has stated that by the middle of the decade, half of the vehicles produced in Dingolfing will be electric.
Last year, the plant produced 231,970 automobiles, representing for over a tenth of BMW’s entire output.
