China’s Ministry of Natural Resources released guidelines on digital maps for intelligent and connected vehicles on Tuesday, with the goal of improving top-level design for mapping standards and ensuring compliant use of geographic information for self-driving cars. The central authorities plan to establish a common map data standard by 2025, covering aspects such as data compiling, map updating, and data sharing. Since last August, Beijing has required automakers and self-driving car developers to secure licenses or use authorized companies for mapping data used in vehicles. Several carmakers, including Xpeng Motors, have been testing their advanced driving technology, powered by high-definition maps for urban driving, since last year.
