REUTERS: Clubhouse, a social audio app, unveiled a direct messaging option called ‘Backchannel’ on Wednesday, allowing one-to-one and group text talks. The invite-only app, which grew rapidly during the COVID-19 pandemic, now faces competition from a slew of tech giants, including Facebook, Twitter, and Spotify, all of which are releasing similar audio chat services.
Since releasing on Android in late May, Clubhouse has acquired more than 8 million new members, according to the company. One of the most desired additions, according to the company, is the ability to direct messages. (New York-based reporter Elizabeth Culliford contributed to this report; Chizu Nomiyama edited it.)
