Clubhouse, an audio-based social media firm, unveiled its “Backchannel” direct messaging function on Wednesday, giving its voice-only network a new dimension.
What Happened: Backchannel will allow users to exchange text-only direct communications to one another or to a group.
Speakers can now accept text-based questions in a LIVE room, and listeners can now submit questions even if they are unable to be on stage.
Clubhouse alleges that the direct messaging feature was mistakenly exposed to a small set of users last month. More features are in the works, according to the San Francisco-based business.
Why Does It Matter? Clubhouse, a buzzy app that has been around for less than a year, has prompted competitors like as Facebook Inc (NASDAQ: FB), Microsoft Corp-owned LinkedIn (NASDAQ: MSFT), and Twitter Inc (NYSE: TWTR) to develop their own audio social networking apps.
After receiving endorsements and appearances from celebrities such as Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA), and Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, the firm rose to fame.
Also see: In just one week, Clubhouse has surpassed one million Android users.
According to SensorTower, an app analytics research organization, Clubhouse hit the 10 million subscription mark for iOS in February.
Clubhouse announced a month ago that it has doubled its subscription base on the Android mobile operating system, which is controlled by Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ: GOOGL) (NASDAQ: GOOG), to more than two million new customers, just weeks after it was made available to consumers outside the iOS ecosystem.
