KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (July 9): Despite the fact that the speed of Malaysia’s immunization program picked up from July 3 to July 9, with weekly vaccination jabs administered reaching a new high of 1.83 million, new Covid-19 cases ballooned to the second highest weekly total on record. The rise in new infections coincided with more intensive close contact tracing and screening in areas subject to the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO).
From July 3 to 9, a total of 51,889 Covid-19 infections were discovered, up 19.9% from 43,290 the previous week. The reporting week came to a close with a new daily case high of 9,180, beating the previous high of 9,020 set on May 29.
Weekly fatalities also hit a record high of 653, up 129 percent from 524 the week before, bringing the total number of coronavirus deaths in the country to 5,980. On Thursday, the number of daily deaths reached a new high of 135 for the first time (July 8).
The number of active cases jumped to 80,665 from 66,958 a week earlier, up 20.5 percent, since weekly recoveries were substantially lower than new infections (36,655). The number of recoveries fell by 144, or 0.4 percent, week over week, to 36,799.

In Malaysia, 731,193 people have recovered from the coronavirus thus far, compared to total infections of 817,838, representing an 89.41% recovery rate.

Selangor has a slew of new record cases.
Selangor, the worst-affected state, had the highest weekly infection rate, with 22,850 cases, up 32.6 percent from the previous week’s 17,236. Since the pandemic was initially diagnosed in the country, the populous state has reported 277,393 Covid-19 cases, with a large portion of it currently under the EMCO.
In Kuala Lumpur, where multiple regions are also under the EMCO, new cases increased by 31.4 percent to 7,010, up from 5,336 the previous week.
R0 is now at 1.09, up from 1.07 the week before.

The basic reproduction number (R-naught or R0) for Covid-19 infections statewide has now climbed to 1.09, up from 1.07 last Friday, according to Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah (July 2).
The R0 or Rt indicates the average number of people infected by each new Covid-19 patient, or the effective reproduction number. If the R0 is less than 1.0, the illness has stopped spreading.
On May 23, the highest R0 of the year was 1.21.

So far, 10 million Covid-19 dosages have been provided.
According to data from the Special Committee for Ensuring Access to Covid-19 Vaccine Supply, Malaysia administered a total of 1.83 million doses to the Malaysian public for the week of July 3-8, rising 18.8% from 1.54 million the previous week (JKJAV).

The nation gave out over 300,000 vaccination doses for four consecutive days from July 5 to July 8, with the largest number being 376,909 doses given on July 8.
As of July 8, at least 22.07 percent of the population had received their first dose of vaccine, with 9.75 percent having been fully immunize.

With 1.315 million persons who have received their first immunization dosage, Selangor leads the way, followed by Sarawak with 1.312 million and Kuala Lumpur with 1.303 million.
