Carnival Princess Cruises and P&O Cruises Australia suspended cruises in and out of Australia on Wednesday, citing uncertainty over the resumption of cruise vacations. Cruise ships were the source of the majority of Australia’s early Covid-19 cases, therefore they were barred from entering the nation in March 2020. Last month, the restrictions were extended until September 17. P&O Cruises Australia said in a statement that the industry has been in discussions with the Australian government and public health authorities about resuming domestic-only cruising since last October. P&O Cruises Australia President Sture Myrmell said, “They (the cruise industries) are like every business in Australia — they need clarity, and I am concerned they may find it increasingly difficult to hang on without a clear pathway forward.” In a second statement, Princess Cruises said it would transfer passengers booked on a canceled voyage to an equivalent cruise next year./n
