KUALA LUMPUR (April 27): Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has advised all project developers not to trespass and carry out construction work near the right-of-way high voltage transmission line areas.
TNB Chief Grid Officer Datuk Ir Husaini Husin said this was to prevent arcing, which could threaten the stability of the National Grid system as well as the risk of electrocution.
“Be reminded that no work can be carried out in the right-of-way areas without TNB’s approval.
“Do not encroach into TNB right-of-way areas. Get (permission) or inform us if you need to carry out work in these areas,” he said in a statement today.
Elaborating, Husaini said those who had been given permission by TNB to carry out work in these areas should be careful to avoid any arc sparks and tripping the electricity supply system, thus causing power disruptions in large areas.
“Thousands of consumers will be affected. The arc sparks that occur can not only result in the loss of property but also the lives of the perpetrators,” he said.
He said they had recently detected three occurrences of arc sparks from TNB transmission towers in Penang and Selangor, which caused the electricity supply system to trip.
He said that as a result of the incidents, the crane operator involved suffered an electric shock, resulting in serious injuries.
According to Husaini, any offence that causes injury or damage to any installation can be fined not exceeding RM100,000 or up to five years’ imprisonment or both.
“As such, we urge all parties, especially developers and owners of factory premises near high voltage lines to always cooperate for the safety of everyone,” he said.
