FRANKFURT – The European Central Bank took a first step toward releasing a digital version of the euro on Wednesday (July 14), as part of a global push to fulfill rising demand for electronic payment methods and combat the rise of cryptocurrencies. “The European Central Bank’s (ECB) Governing Council decided today to begin the inquiry phase of a digital euro project,” the ECB stated in a statement.
“The inquiry phase will last 24 months and will focus on critical design and distribution challenges.”
