In commemoration of the Fourth of July, the NFT, Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima, pours digital life into AP photographer Joe Rosenthal’s Pulitzer Prize-winning shot.
The Associated Press (AP) and Ethernity, a community-oriented platform that develops limited edition authenticated non-fungible tokens (NFTs), are partnering to bring a historic AP shot of American soldiers raising the flag on Iwo Jima to life. To commemorate and celebrate the AP’s 175th anniversary, acclaimed digital artist Marko Stanojevic has digitally reimagined AP photographer Joe Rosenthal’s masterpiece “Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima.” “RAISING THE FLAG ON IWO JIMA: AP ARTiFACT 1” is the title of the spectacular new 1:1 NFT collection, which will be available for purchase on July 4th, 2021 at 12 p.m. ET.

“There’s uniqueness, and then there’s the incomparable and priceless Iwo Jima,” Ethernity CEO Nick Rose remarked. “To this new community of digital art collectors and aficionados of American history, this amazing, 1:1 work of art is validated by the AP on the Ethereum blockchain and unrivaled in history and relevance.”
Nick Kennerly, a violinist and composer, composed and played the NFT’s original score, “Flag Rising.”
“”I want the collector to experience not only the success of the event, but also a sense of loss and remembering,” Kennerly adds. I want the collector to get a rush from the powerful rhythmic pulse, similar to what I got from Marko’s work. That melodic pulse should feel like a soldier’s pounding heart in the heat of combat.”
Among the items in the NFT collection are: A stunning full-motion 3D digitalization of the Pulitzer Prize-winning image that follows the battle from the beach landing to the summit of Mount Suribachi? The first 360-degree view at historic imagery, newly generated. What happened to the digitized Iwo Jima negative? Is it possible to get a digital copy of the first print generated from the Iwo Jima negative? Rosenthal captured seven further spectacular and harrowing photographs during the tense assault of Iwo Jima. Film footage from the Battle of Iwo Jima that has never been seen before? Is it possible to get a digital copy of the first print created from the negative? Is there any audio of the late Joe Rosenthal talking about the cultural impact of his famous photograph? Is there any audio from the four-day battle? David Hume, a Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Kennerly’s heartfelt and emotional eulogy for Rosenthal in 2006
The highest bidder on this NFT will also receive an actual digital display frame from Infinity Objects.

“As the oldest fact-based news organization, we are happy to join with Ethernity to make available this historic tale and amazing visual artifacts,” said Dwayne Desaulniers, the Associated Press’ director of blockchain and data licensing.
