KUCHING, 5 JULY: A plywood plant in Kuala Baram, Miri, that did not follow the standard operating procedure (SOP) regarding the number of workers allowed on the job has sparked a new Covid-19 Cluster in Sarawak, with 113 positive cases.
The State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) said today that the Sarawak Health Department has declared three new clusters, including the Industry 121 Kuala Baram Cluster, which included factory employees’ housing.
“Non-citizens made up 107 of the 113 instances, while Malaysians from Sarawak made up six. From July 1 to 15, the plant workers’ quarters are under the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) “according to the statement
It claimed the factory’s management had been handed a 14-day closure order and a RM10,000 compound for failing to ensure that only 50% of the workers was present at the factory, as required by the state’s Ministry of International Trade & Industry, Industrial Terminal and Entrepreneur Development.
The Sungai Sebetan Cluster, which had 45 positive cases among occupants of a private house and a longhouse in Sungai Sebetan, Saratok, and the Sega Cluster, which had 17 positive cases among numerous families in Kampung Sega, Bau, were the other two new clusters.
Today, Sarawak recorded 424 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the total to 66,985 cases.
From July 4 to 18, various locations in Bintulu, Sri Aman, Saratok, and Sarikei were subjected to the EMCO, according to JPBN, including the rental rooms above Kedai Lau Hoi Chew, Parkcity Commercial Centre (Bintulu), and the rental rooms above the V-12 shop, Assyakirin Commercial Centre (Bintulu).
