In a significant loss to American politics, former U.S. Senator and vice-presidential candidate, Joe Lieberman, has passed away at 82, following complications from a fall.

Lieberman, a significant figure in American politics, held the position of U.S. senator from Connecticut from 1989 to 2013, BBC reported on Thursday. He made history as the first Jewish politician to be on a major U.S. presidential ticket when Al Gore chose him as his running mate in 2000.

Gore expressed his deep sorrow at Lieberman’s passing, saying, “It was an honor to stand side-by-side with him on the campaign trail.”

Known for his independent stance on several issues, Lieberman, a long-time Democrat, was a vocal supporter of the Iraq War. In his later years, he served as the founding chairman of No Labels, a centrist political group.

Lieberman’s family, in their statement, underscored his enduring love for God, his family, and America. His contributions to public interest were a testament to his commitment to service.

His career was characterized by his ability to cross party lines and his dedication to progressive policies, such as his role in ending the Pentagon’s ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy.
