Last week, the number of Americans filing new unemployment claims fell more than predicted, while layoffs fell to a 21-year low in June as businesses clung to their employees amid labor shortages. The Labor Department said on Thursday that initial claims for state unemployment benefits fell 51,000 to a seasonally adjusted 364,000 for the week ending June 26.
