Oprah with Meghan and Harry: A CBS Primetime Special, which aired in March, was nominated in the category of “Outstanding Hosted Nonfiction Series or Special.”

In a two-hour interview conducted outside of Harry and Meghan’s magnificent property in Montecito, Calif., the couple gave their account of events leading up to and following their departure as senior working members of the royal family.

According to Harry and Meghan, members of the royal family expressed concern over the skintone of their prospective mixed-race children, and Buckingham Palace denied Meghan’s requests for mental health care when she was suicidal, and palace personnel failed to protect her from unfavorable press coverage.

If the show wins, it will be Winfrey’s second Emmy.

On Showtime, the interview will compete with Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy, David Letterman’s My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, W. Kamau Bell’s United Shades Of America, and Vice.

There are 17 million inhabitants in the country. That’s how many people in the United States saw the interview when it aired in March. It gained an additional 11.3 million viewers in the United Kingdom when it broadcast the next day across the pond.
This year, Winfrey’s show isn’t the only one to win an Emmy for its portrayal of the British royal family. The Crown got 24 Emmy nominations for its fourth season, which portrays Harry’s mother, Princess Diana, as she battles to adjust to life after marrying into the royal family.
Harry and Meghan’s interview with Winfrey was their first since leaving the royal family in early 2020 and relocating to the United States. After the episode aired, the royal family issued a statement on behalf of Harry’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, stating they were “saddened” to learn of “the full depth” of the couple’s difficulties. “The issues presented, notably those of race,” the statement continued. “While some recollections may differ, the family takes all of them seriously and will deal with them individually.” Harry has visited his family twice since the interview aired: at his grandfather Prince Philip’s funeral in April and at a ceremony to install a statue of Princess Diana in London’s Kensington Gardens in July.
