KUALA LUMPUR, 14 JULY: Under the Commissions of Enquiry Act 1950 (Act 119), the government would appoint a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to look into matters relating to Lembaga Tabung Haji (LTH).
The matter was decided upon at today’s Cabinet meeting, according to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, following difficulties originating from audits conducted by consultants like as PricewaterhouseCoopers, Ernst & Young, and Roland Berger between 2014 and 2020.
“It is appropriate to establish the RCI so that further investigations can be conducted on the issues raised and relevant suggestions can be provided to the Government to restore the people of LTH’s image and confidence,” he said in a statement today.
The RCI would also ensure that an internal investigation may be conducted in an open and trustworthy manner to confirm that LTH followed out its mandate competently in managing Muslim deposits, he added.
According to Ismail Sabri, one of the terms agreed upon by the Cabinet was that the RCI’s scope would be limited to the consultants’ conclusions on concerns originating from LTH from 2014 to 2020, but not the present LTH Restructuring and Rehabilitation Plan.
