A 21-year-old landed an internship in New Jersey, but decided to keep living in South Carolina. She’s saving thousands of dollars by flying to work on a weekly basis.
What To Know: Sophia Celentano got hired for a 10-week summer internship just outside of New York City. By living at home with her parents in Charleston, South Carolina and flying to the office once a week, she will save at least $2,000, according to a CNBC report.
After doing some math, Celentano determined that she would end up spending at least $4,250 living near the office throughout the summer. On the other hand, she would only need to spend about $2,250 during the internship period on her commute from South Carolina, which includes about $100 per week on flights and $100 per week on Uber Technologies Inc UBER rides.

She’s only required to be in the office once per week, and she’s able to get a flight out for just $27 and her return flight costs about $60.
The difference comes to about $2,000 in savings, but that’s being pretty optimistic about what it would cost to live near the office.
The average rent in New York City is approximately $3,500 per month. Celentano’s savings calculations assume that she would have been able to find an apartment for approximately $1,000 per month, so it’s possible she’s actually saving a lot more than $2,000 by taking on the long-distance commute.
Every Wednesday, the 21-year-old college student boards a flight at 6 a.m. and then catches a plane home around 9 p.m. In total, she spends more than four hours on a plane each Wednesday, but the savings and other benefits are worth it.
“I didn’t think twice about it,” Celentano told CNBC.
By commuting once a week, she is able to spend the rest of her time near family and friends, which helps cut down on stress, she said.
“Ironically, having a longer commute has helped me have a healthier work-life balance,” Celentano said.
