TOKYO, JAPAN – The CEO of Mitsubishi Electric Corp announced his resignation on Friday after the company admitted to falsifying inspection data for air conditioners and braking compressors used by railway operators dating back more than three decades. “This astounded me. I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience we have caused “At a press conference, Takeshi Sugiyama stated. He stated that once he has organized the company’s reaction to the crisis, he will pick a replacement.
Mitsubishi’s admission could further degrade Japan’s reputation for high-quality manufacturing, which has already been marred by other businesses faking or concealing test results.
Mitsubishi has stated that the equipment supplied with forged data poses no safety concern, and has pledged to release a full report in September, along with solutions to the problem.
Hiroshi Kajiyama, Japan’s economy and commerce minister, has stated that the government will take action if the corporation violates any laws or regulations.
Mitsubishi Electric, one of Japan’s oldest industrial corporations, manufactures everything from air conditioners and vacuum cleaners to industrial printers and satellites.
