The National Football League has created an internet video proclaiming “Football is gay” as Pride Month draws to a close.
What happened was this: Carl Nassib, a defensive end with the Las Vegas Raiders, declared his sexual orientation earlier this month, making him the first current player in the NFL to do so. Nassib also claimed that he will donate $100,000 to the Trevor Project, a suicide prevention group for LGBTQ kids, as part of his statement.
The NFL’s new internet film not only confirmed the league’s dedication to Nassib’s role, but also portrayed the league as tolerant and inclusive. “Football is gay” is written in all capital letters at the start of the commercial. “Lesbian,” “beautiful,” “queer,” “interesting,” “cultural,” “transgender,” “tough,” “power,” “bisexual,” “American,” “accepting,” and “anything” are used to substitute the word “gay.”
The film concludes with the words “Football is for everyone,” the NFL logo featuring the Pride rainbow flag, and a statement from the league stating it “proudly supports” the Trevor Project.

Why Does It Matter? After Nassib came out, the NFL tweeted its support for him, promising to match his donation to the Trevor Project, which the league funded as part of its Pride @ NFL campaign.
The new video received mixed reviews on Twitter (NYSE: TWTR).
Charlotte Clymer, a transgender activist and former press secretary for the Human Rights Campaign, was one of the social media supporters, tweeting, “Forgive me if I’m not cynical, but seeing a @NFL commercial proclaiming that “football is transgender” strikes me as huge? That is enormous. Wow.”
James Somerton, a videographer, was also pleasantly pleased, tweeting, “This, on the other hand, is something I never expected to witness. What comes next? Nascar?”
On the other hand, the official Twitter account for “”The Mike Essen Show” on BlogTalk Radio expressed displeasure with the message, “The @NFL has over the line by declaring the #NFL is Gay.” That is an insult to all straight people in the NFL, including players, coaches, fans, and others!! #boycottNFL I hope these left wingers fold.”
