MOSCOW: According to the Interfax news agency, Russia has not received any communication from the US regarding a sophisticated ransomware attack that impacted hundreds of American organizations and led to suspicions of Russian gang involvement. The attack, according to security firm Huntress Labs, was carried out by the Russia-linked REvil ransomware organization. President Joe Biden has ordered an investigation by US intelligence agencies.
“I have no evidence that any information was provided. No, there was no data received “Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the Kremlin, was quoted by Interfax as saying. The Kremlin, he claimed, was unaware of the incident. During a summit in Geneva on June 16, Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to begin discussions on cybersecurity concerns, with Biden warning of dire consequences if ransomware assaults from Russia continued to spread. Russia has denied carrying out or condoning cyberattacks on several occasions. (Anton Kolodyazhnyy and Alexander Marrow contributed reporting; Kevin Liffey edited the piece.)
