OSLO – Norwegian Foreign Minister Ine Eriksen Soereide said on Monday that a cyber attack on the Nordic country’s parliament e-mail system on March 10 was carried out from China, and she urged Chinese authorities to take steps to avoid future attacks. In a statement, Soereide added, “This is a severe act that has struck our most vital democratic institution.”
The attack was traced back to China, according to Norway’s intelligence services, and numerous allies, including the European Union and Microsoft, have corroborated this, she continued.
The assault took use of a flaw in Microsoft’s Exchange platform.
“Chinese authorities must avoid such attacks,” Soereide said, adding that she expects China to take the matter very seriously.
Soereide said the Chinese ambassador to Norway had been summoned on Monday to discuss the matter directly.
