TOKYO — ChatGPT developer OpenAI is set to launch its first Asian base with an office in Tokyo this month, intending to provide tailored corporate services and participate in creating a governance framework for the technology, Nikkei has learned.

OpenAI has been showing interest in Japan. Chief Executive Sam Altman met Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in Tokyo last April — a year after the American company unveiled ChatGPT, igniting a global frenzy around generative AI — and hinted at establishing an office in the country.
