KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (July 1): Despite global LNG project uncertainties and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, construction of Petroliam Nasional Bhd’s (Petronas) 25%-owned associate LNG Canada’s estimated C$40 billion (about RM134.04 billion) liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities in Canada’s British Columbia province is moving forward. The biggest private-sector investment in Canadian history is in its third year of construction, according to Engineering News-Record (ENR), which quoted LNG Canada CEO Peter Zebedee as saying that the project is facing Covid-19-driven project delays and cost overruns, with the completion date pushed back to the second half of 2025. (2H25).
“Firm executives said the virus, scope adjustments, and permission delays would continue to have an impact on cost and time, but that the project would be operational in 2023. Investments in upstream natural gas infrastructure are among the other costs incurred by LNG Canada “According to ENR.
Fluor Corp and JGC Corp, as well as subcontractor Soletanche Bachy Canada, were reported to have completed Phase 1 of work on LNG Canada’s export terminal in the Kitimat district of British Columbia.
According to reports, the export terminal is the project’s most important component.
The 670-kilometer Coastal GasLink pipeline, which is being built by TC Energy to transfer gas from northern British Columbia fields to the terminal, is also part of the project, according to ENR.
According to the news source, a 345-tonne, 50-meter-tall cryogenic heat exchanger and two somewhat smaller units to convert gas to liquid for export were delivered in June 2021 to the project’s new offloading port in Kitimat Harbour.
According to reports, Zebedee referred to the delivery as a “major milestone.”
According to LNG Canada authorities, the project is on schedule to “transport its first cargo” by the middle of the decade.
Construction is expected to peak next year, requiring up to 7,500 workers in rotating shifts, according to reports.
There will be more to come.
