KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (July 8): As part of its sustainability goal and aspiration of Net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2050, Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) has initiated an effort to deploy solar energy at the group’s assets across Malaysia in order to boost efficiency and reduce carbon emissions (NZCE 2050). Petronas said in a statement today that ground-mounted and rooftop solar systems will be installed on four of its assets this year, resulting in a combined capacity of over 66 megawatt peak (MWp) and helping the company save 58,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per year.
“This effort includes a completed 8.33MWp solar rooftop installation at Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering Holdings Bhd’s yard in Pasir Gudang, Johor, namely MMHE West, which is the largest of its kind in a single compound in Malaysia, as well as a 7.3MWp solar rooftop installation at Universiti Teknologi Petronas in Seri Iskandar, Perak, which is on track to be completed by the end of 2022.”
The remaining two projects in the pipeline are a 49MWp ground-mounted and rooftop solar installation at Pengerang Integrated Complex in Johor, which is expected to be completed in 1QFY22, and a 1.4MWp solar rooftop installation at Institut Teknologi Petroleum Petronas (INSTEP) in Terengganu.
For scale, Petronas stated that the combined installed capacity of the four sites can generate enough electricity to power over 20,000 houses.
Dr Jay Mariyappan, Petronas’ head of new energy, said that while the company is actively involved in supplying clean energy to companies, it recognizes that the transformational effort should begin at home as part of its road to NZCE 2050.
“In this regard, we will be using our own M+ by Petronas solar solution for the installations, where we integrate high-quality systems and products that we have provided for our customers around the world,” says the company. “This will help power our assets with a reliable supply of solar energy for decades to come, while optimizing performance using the HAWK A.I Data Monitoring System that we currently offer,” says the company.
Petronas stated that as part of a phased strategy to attaining NZCE 2050, it will continue to examine the energy usage of its assets and the group’s portfolio to seek potential for electrifying processes and maximising renewable energy use./nRead More
