KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (July 9): According to a report by Malaysiakini, the police are investigating Top Glove Corp Bhd for allegedly relocating 1,606 workers from their dormitories in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, to eight hotels prior to the imposition of the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) there. Local authorities had ordered Top Glove to suspend operations with immediate effect, according to the news portal.
The police have identified the eight hotels that Top Glove reportedly exploited as transit lodging for their migrant workers, according to Selangor police chief Arjunaidi Mohamed.
The workers are not allowed to leave the hotels, according to the police chief, who spoke at a press conference today.
“We have filed an investigation (paper) under Section 270 of the Penal Code over their activity,” Arjunaidi was quoted as saying. “A total of 1,606 personnel were transferred to eight hotels from their dorms at Weslite in Bandar Sunway, Petaling Jaya, prior to the implementation of the targeted MCO.
He went on to say that the personnel had been tested for Covid-19, and that the results were still pending.
Meanwhile, Top Glove was described as claiming it was working with authorities on the situation.
According to the news outlet, a woman stated in a viral video that the surge of Covid-19 cases in Selangor was caused by a glove manufacturing shifting its migrant workers from Petaling Jaya hostels to Klang hotels.
Klang and Petaling Jaya are two of the areas in Selangor that have been placed under the EMCO from July 3 to July 16.
Top Glove’s stock increased 10 sen, or 2.7 percent, to RM3.82 per share Wednesday, giving the company a market capitalization of RM31.35 billion./nRead More
