Despite a drop in steel and car volumes, Port Houston’s container activity in June topped the record level of twenty-foot equivalent units set in the same month previous year.
The total volume of containers shipped in June was 292,627 TEUs, up 39% over the same month in 2020.
In June, import container volume surged by 46% to 151,676 TEUs, up from 103,905 TEUs the previous month. The amount of export containers climbed by 32% year over year to 140,951 TEUs.
In June, total bulk cargo tonnage increased 15% year over year to 1.6 million short tons (ST), with industrial chemicals accounting for 876,144 ST, petroleum coke 255,955 ST, dry bulk 198,776 ST, and grain accounting for 140,249 ST.
Bagged products led the way with 56,607 ST, followed by all commodities with 49,438 ST, plywood with 33,542 ST, self-propelled machinery with 4,968 ST, lumber with 4,054 ST, and agriculture machinery with 2,123 ST.
Steel and car imports both decreased in June, with steel imports down 2% year over year to 282,780 ST. June’s auto import/export numbers were unavailable.
