Reuters/Brendan McDermid Due to a substantial risk of false negative results in patients who have high levels of the virus, Quidel is recalling its Lyra Covid-19 Assay test. Quidel manufactures diagnostic health-care products all over the world. The Food and Drug Administration granted emergency use authorisation to the Covid test in March. It detects RNA unique to the SARS-CoV-2 virus using a swab sample from the nasal area. “False negative results may result in delayed diagnosis or incorrect treatment of SARS-CoV-2, resulting in patient damage, serious illness, or death,” the FDA noted on its website when it announced the recall. False negative results could transmit the virus further in a community, putting other high-risk people in danger of damage or death. Quidel has received five complaints regarding the product, although no injuries or deaths have been reported as a result of its use.
