KUALA LUMPUR (April 7): Sime Darby Property Bhd’s 21K Strong Virtual Run & Ride Movement that took place from Jan 21 to March 21 saw over 10,000 participants run and cycle a distance of more than one million km to raise RM53,185 for underprivileged communities.

In a statement, the group said the distance target was revised to one million km from the initial 21,000km after participants achieved the goal in a mere three days.

“The 21K Strong Virtual Run & Ride was a great opportunity for the community to remain active, exercise safely and connect with one another. People’s well-being is always at the forefront of every sustainable community and even more so during a pandemic. We will continue to support outreach programmes to enrich the lives of those living within and around our townships,” said group managing director Datuk Azmir Merican Azmi Merican.

The event was organised to help underprivileged communities in Taman Bukit Subang within the City of Elmina in Shah Alam, part of the Sime Darby Property Economic Enhancement Programme.

“This initiative aims to uplift local communities through capacity building, equipping participants with basic financial knowledge for better decision-making in their daily lives.

“The programme utilises vacant or underutilised commercial complexes within Sime Darby Property’s townships as community centres to generate a sustainable source of income for underprivileged communities.

“A community of B40 (bottom 40% income group) households in Taman Bukit Subang within the City of Elmina has been selected as the first beneficiaries of this programme,” said the group.

Additionally, the programme also fulfils the Sime Darby Property Sustainability Goals 2030 in job creation (Goal 5); the United Nations’ (UN) sustainability goals in no poverty (Goal 1); decent work and economic growth (Goal 8); and sustainable cities and communities (Goal 11).

According to the group, the programme is aligned with the Penjana GLC Community initiative put forth by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, which encourages government-linked companies (GLCs) to adopt communities and help them to thrive.

As at 11.07am today, Sime Darby Property was unchanged at 67 sen, valuing the group at RM4.56 billion.
