TOKYO — Sony Group will begin mass-producing laser diodes that promise to help double the capacity of hard disk drives (HDDs) and meet today’s insatiable demand for data centers, Nikkei has learned.

Sony Semiconductor Solutions will start producing the diodes in May, partnering with Seagate Technology of the U.S., which will use the parts for 3.5-inch HDDs that can store 30 terabytes worth of data, about twice the amount of conventional products.
