1 Minute Read by Reuters Staff (Reuters) – MADRID, July 1 (Reuters) – Caixabank has reached an agreement with unions to lay off 6,452 staff, down from roughly 8,300 previously planned, according to a representative for the Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) union. According to the spokesperson, the agreement to decrease the bank’s personnel in Spain by 14.5 percent was achieved after the bank agreed to certain of the union’s conditions, such as implementing any job cutbacks through voluntary redundancies rather than compulsory layoffs. Caixabank did not respond to a request for comment. Caixabank said in April that it would reduce 8,291 positions and close 1,534 branches, or slightly more than a quarter of its offices, in order to respond to a shift in customer preferences toward online banking.
