TAIPEI – Taiwan’s jobless rate reached a more than seven-year high of 4.15 percent in May, when restrictions on the entertainment and hospitality industries were implemented to help limit the spread of COVID-19 cases. The unemployment rate in May was the highest since October 2013, when it reached 4.17 percent.
In May, Taiwan upgraded its alert level to combat an outbreak of diseases, restricting personal gatherings, banning entertainment facilities, and prohibiting restaurants from serving anything other than takeout.
However, the number of cases is currently decreasing, and the Cabinet announced on Monday that ministries and authorities should make plans to relax restrictions.
Despite the local coronavirus pandemic, Taiwan’s export-dependent semiconductor industry has mostly remained unharmed.
