BEIJING – The Asia Internet Coalition, which is backed by Google and Facebook, has told Hong Kong’s personal data protection commissioner that planned changes to the territory’s privacy regulations could cause its members to pull out of the territory. In a letter seen by Reuters, AIC managing director Jeff Paine said, “Introducing sanctions targeting at individuals is not consistent with worldwide standards and trends.” “The only way for technology companies to avoid these sanctions is to stop investing and providing services in Hong Kong.”
