PALO ALTO, California — TikTok could be banned in the U.S. if the company fails to cut ties with Chinese parent ByteDance within nine months, after President Joe Biden signed a bill into law on Wednesday.
The U.S. Senate passed broad legislation late Tuesday that requires ByteDance to divest its American operations within 270 days, with the potential of a one-time extension of up to 90 days granted by the U.S. president if he deems the company is close to a divestiture. The legislation was passed as part of a foreign aid bill to Ukraine, Israel and other U.S. allies.
