Cooking oil spill by tanker at Juru toll gate on PLUS highway causes massive jam

BUKIT MERTAJAM (April 20): A tanker transporting 20,000 litres of cooking oil crashed into a pole at the Juru northbound toll plaza on the PLUS highway today, which caused oil to spill out of a hole in its side.

A distress call was received at 12.03pm and a team from the Perai fire station was dispatched immediately, said a Malaysia Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Penang spokesperson in a statement today.

“The driver in his 50s had suffered minor injuries and was sent to Hospital Seberang Jaya.

“However, the toll plaza lane was covered in oil that had poured out of the lorry because of the accident.”

JBPM and PLUS personnel sprang into action to plug the hole, said the spokesperson, while adding that the clean-up ended at 1.30pm and that the accident had caused a 4km jam.
